Sharon Van Etten, The War on Drugs review
It’s interesting when artists from two distinct genres play a show, because it seemed a lot of people there last night were there for the opener rather than Sharon. Still, she’s the most “normal” rock star I’ve ever seen. She obviously isn’t a superstar, but it was also the first time I’d been at a show where the artist had immediate family there (not on stage) and so she kept talking to her siblings through the show at random points, which was sort of interesting.
After the show, she and her sister shared a moment and I naturally wanted to regale in the commonality of our Jerseydom, but…I decided to just get in the car and make the near 3-hour trek home and get to work for this morning.
Still, unlike a lot of artists she managed to do a fabulous job of recreating her tracks without making you pine for wax. Her voice is unvarnished, beautiful and minus any frills. Obviously she’s adorable, but that’s besides the point. I found her entertained, self-deprecating and reminded me of Fiona Apple in the way that her stage performance seems to be one of those all-in experiences where she’s giving you everything she has. Except, she’s obviously more engaging than Fiona is.
You got to lose. You got to lose.
You got to lose sometime.

Sharon Van Etten - A Crime
It should be a crime that I slept on this for so long. I heard of her a ton, but just kept missing it for one reason or another. The few times I heard it, I wasn’t drawn in. Welp, in I’m drawn like a fish on a hook.
