Water For Elephants (2011)

I’d seen ads for this movie, but really knew nothing about it. I mean, Robert Pattinson isn’t exactly high on my radar list. But I had occasion to see it last night. We meet this old guy who shows up at the circus with his retirement community and gets “left behind” only to discover that he intentionally left himself behind.

He gets to talking to one of the circus workers and begins to tell him his own story of the circus, his past and how he get where he is now. So naturally, this is a love story about two crazy kids who show up in the circus for different reasons and end up falling for each other.

This story is predictable, but I tended to think it’d be one of those deals where they’d end up never getting together and he’d wistfully recall lost love. But no, it pretty much checks all of the boxes and does so in a long-winded way so if you need a snack for this DVD, get one, as you’ll be sitting there a while.

Still, I am not (too) ashamed to say I actually enjoyed this. It’s not a movie I’d have ever put on my agenda to watch, but it was well-written, generally well acted and the story was unique and interesting to boot. If you’re looking for a quiet evening movie with a decent (and perhaps a bit too predictable) storyline, then Water For Elephants won’t disappoint.
