When a drunk and bloodied Ryan Gosling climbs into bed with the apparent love of his life in the Cannes Selection Preview for Blue Valentine and says to her that he has “a song that will be just for you and me—because everyone has songs but they are all lame, and they all share them and it’s disgusting” it is sweet and you understand exactly what he is getting at and then he puts on Penny and the Quarters singing You and Me and ruins it.
You and Me is the only known recording by Penny and the Quarters, it isn’t even a song really, just a practice run through or a warm up never intended for distribution, but then it got added to the Numero Group’s Eccentric Soul: The Prix Label compilation and probably got pressed on a few other weird compilations. And, for awhile, it could actually have been a private song just for two people, but then Derek Cianfrance put it in his movie and told Ryan Gosling to tell us that You and Me is the perfect love song and now we all need to share it. We need to share it with couples and with 14 year old Ryan Gosling fans from Albuquerque and with people we don’t like and with the radio and with everyone on tumblr and it is going to be lame and disgusting. Even with Blue Vaneltine’s NC-17 rating you know we are going to hear a lot more of this song, which is great because the song is beautiful, but also a little sad because You and Me is great because you don’t hear it all the time, and because it isn’t in a Kia commercial, and because listening to it makes you feel like you’re a member of an exclusive club and because it actually could have been a song just for the two of them.
You and Me is going to become the new Anyone Else But You and all we can do is blog about how we were into it first, which I guess is probably part of the problem.
